My interview with Dominic for Jazz Tokyo.

私が先日行った、ドミニク・ミラーへの「来日直前インタビュー」の記事を『Jazz Tokyo』様に掲載して頂きました。

このサイトの主催者、稲岡邦弥さんはECM Recordsの日本マネージャーで、50年前に日本にECMを紹介して、定着させた方です。
キース・ジャレットの作品が日本で沢山録音されているのは稲岡さんの尽力があったからです。つまり、ECMの創立者マンフレート・アイヒャーのパートナーのような人です。

この素晴らしいウェブサイトにドミニクのインタビューを掲載できることを大変光栄に思います。

私は単なる素人のファンですが、ドミニクについて、重要だと思われるポイントについてはなるべく記事中に取り上げたつもりです。
日本の皆さんにドミニクのことをもっと知っていただく良い機会になると思っています。よかったら読んでいただけると嬉しいです。

My interview with Dominic Miller just before his visit to Japan was published today on the very famous website called “Jazz Tokyo”.

This site administrator, Kenny Inaoka is the long-time Japan manager of ECM Records. This year ECM Records celebrates its 55th anniversary, and he introduced and established ECM music in Japan 50 years ago. Many of Keith Jarrett’s works have been recorded in Japan because of Kenny’s efforts. In other words, he is like a partner to Manfred Eicher.

I’m very honoured to be able to publish Dominic’s interview on this wonderful website.
I’m just an amateur fan, but also I have tried to cover as many points about Dominic as possible in the article that I think are important.
I believe it will be a great opportunity for people in Japan to get to know him better. I hope you will read it if you like.

濃い内容のインタビュー！読みました！
インタビューの中で、ドミニクが、その完璧さと同じくらい不完全さに魅せられたという部分が特に面白かったです。

例えばAIなんかは完璧な演奏を瞬時に生成できるでしょう。なんなら、人間が引き起こすのと似たようなミスを生成して、演出としての生々しさを組み込む事すらできるかもしれません。ただ、表面上は人間の作った不完全な音楽と似ていても、AIのそれは合理的な計算の解答以上のものではなく、人を感動させることは無いと思います。

人間の偶発的なミスの背後には、数えきれないほどの思考や、解釈に至るまでの悩みや、迷いの過程や、情念や、乗り越えがたい壁が、その人だけの物語としてあり、それがその人の物語や生き様として表れているのを聴く側が無意識に感じているからこそ、不完全さに感動するのだと思います。

そのような不完全さやミスといったものをレコードで提供すると、リスナーをあなたの世界に引き込むことができるのです。これはECMというレーベルのアイデンティティの一部なのです。←だからこの部分を読んで、ＥＣＭは、表面的な美しさではなくアーティストの本質の美しさ力強さを大事にする会社なんだなと私は思いました。

A very informative interview! I read it!

I found the part of the interview where Dominique said he was fascinated by imperfection as much as perfection, particularly interesting.

For example, AI could instantly generate a perfect performance. It may even be able to generate mistakes similar to those made by humans, incorporating a vividness as a performance. However, even if it resembles imperfect music made by humans on the surface, AI’s music is nothing more than a rational solution, and I don’t think it will move people.

Behind the accidental mistakes of humans, there are countless thoughts, worries leading to interpretation, processes of hesitation, emotions, and insurmountable walls, which are a story unique to that person, and I think that the listener is moved by imperfection because they unconsciously feel that this is expressed as the person’s story and way of life.

When you provide such imperfections and mistakes on a record, you can draw the listener into your world. This is part of the identity of the label ECM. ←So when I read this part, I realized that ECM is a company that values ​​the essential beauty and strength of an artist, rather than superficial beauty.

そのエピソードは本当に面白いですよね。

結局、生成AIというのは過去の情報から最適解を導き出すだけです。でも、人間が何かを創り出す場合は、その人の人生経験が土台になります。AIには、人生の喜びも苦しみも理解する事はできません。だから私はやはりAIなどは人間が作る芸術を本当の部分では超える事はできないと思っています。

だからドミニクもこのインタビューの中で言っていますよね。
【DM: 私が作曲するインスピレーションを与えてくれるのは、必ずしも音楽とは限りません。その音楽以外のインスピレーションとは、より多くの人生の経験です。出会った人々、読んだ本、見た展覧会、食べたものなど様々です。次のアルバムの音楽は、これらすべての影響から生まれたものになるでしょう。】

そういう事なんだと思います。

I think that episode is really interesting.

After all, a generative AI can only derive the best solution from past information. But when a human being creates something, that person’s life experience is the foundation, and an AI cannot understand the joys and pains of life. So I still believe that AI and others can never really surpass the art that humans create.

That’s why Dominic also says in this interview.
【DM: What inspires me to write music isn’t necessarily music. It’s more life experiences. The people I meet, books I read, exhibitions I see, food I eat etc. The music on the next album will come from all these influences.】

I think that’s what it’s all about.

本当にかっこいい写真ですよね！インタビューの下の方にある横顔の写真も恐ろしくカッコいい。
これ、小さいとあまりわからないかもしれないけど、大きいと本当に見惚れちゃうから。

このインタビュー用にこの写真をドミニクのマネージャーから送ってもらったんですけど、結構大きいサイズで送られてきて。
そしてこれは新しいドミニクのSong Bookに使われているものなんですが、その時私はこの写真は初めて見たので、
見た瞬間「ひ！」って悲鳴出ました・・・。マジで心臓止まるかと思いました・・・。
その後も1日くらい心臓ドキドキしてました（笑）

It’s a really cool photo! The profile photo at the bottom of the interview is also terribly cool.
If the photos are small, you may not feel much, but if you look at the larger photos, you will be intensely attracted to Dominic once again because of his coolness.
I was sent these for this interview by Dominic’s manager, and they were quite large.
And these are the ones used in the new Dominic songbook. But at the time I had never seen these pictures, so when I saw them I screamed in amazement at how cool they were… I really thought my heart was going to stop…
My heart was pounding for about a day afterwards [lol].
